PRACTICE
One calculation at a time
Aaron Kostrzewa, PE
Every large project looks impossible from the start. A hospital tower’s worth of cladding calcs. A curtainwall package with hundreds of details. A building investigation with a dozen units, a roof, and years of leak history to sort out.
Engineering keeps teaching me the same lesson: big problems get solved by turning them into a list of clear, specific tasks. Nobody finishes the whole scope at once. You finish the list.
The method is not exciting:
Make the plan first. Break the scope down until each piece is something you could finish in one sitting - a load path, a connection check, a section of the report.
Put on blinders. Once the plan exists, stop second-guessing it. Work the task in front of you.
Let the small wins add up. Progress that feels invisible day to day turns into a sealed package, a finished report, a closed-out project.
This is also why we run projects with a standing weekly check-in and documented decisions. The plan stays visible, the next step is always known, and nobody is guessing about status.
Progress in this business is made one calculation at a time.
